Garbage Disposal Tip

Published on 27 February 2013 by in Tips

To keep your garbage disposal clean, run ice cubes through it. You can also 1/4 a lemon & run it through.

Feed your disposal slowly.
Do not put fat or stringy fibrous foods in your garbage disposal.
To sharpen dull teeth, run a filter-full of coffee grinds through your garbage disposal w/cold water & let it run until grinds are completely dissolved.
Run cold water before, during, & after using garbage disposal.

Push little red button on motor housing if your garbage disposal appears burned out.

If these tips don’t help breathe new life into your old garbage disposal, you might need to call Maslyn & Sons appliance for garbage disposal repair or garbage disposal replacement.

Washing Machine Tip – Residue

Published on 20 February 2013 by in Tips

Avoiding detergent residue

Detergent residue is often the result of detergent not being properly dissolved before the wash. In other cases, placing washing on the surface of a full machine before adding detergent can cause air pockets to form under the washload. The undissolved detergent that remains in the air pockets is not dispersed by water agitating in the wash load. Undissolved detergent is then distributed through the wash load.
Lumps of powdered detergent are more difficult to dissolve.
The primary solution would be to use liquid detergent.
However, if you prefer your powdered detergent, you can try these tips;
To prevent lumpiness, store your powdered detergents in a dry area to avoid moisture pick-up.
Add detergent to the wash water and run your machine for a few minutes before immersing the article to be washed. This will help ensure the detergent powder is properly dissolved.
You can also pre-mix the detergent with water before adding.

Additional washing machine tip – we recommend switching out your rubber hoses for steel braided hoses. This will help avoid leaks and floods.

Valentine’s Day Appliance TLC Tips

Published on 14 February 2013 by in Tips

Show your appliances some tender loving care this Valentine’s Day to avoid kitchen heartbreak. Love your appliances and they will love you back.

Oven TLC

As you have seen in past holiday tips, don’t run the self-cleaning cycle on your oven within one week of a big dinner – ovens have a tendency to fail during, or right after, a self-cleaning cycle.

Clean the reflector bowls under the burners to help cook more efficiently.

Dishwasher TLC

If you’re unsure whether or not an item is dishwasher safe, just wash it by hand.
Run an empty dishwasher with a cup of white vinegar to eliminate odors and buildup.
Use Lemishine with your normal detergent so your glasses won’t be cloudy (Maslyn & Sons techs usually cary it on our trucks.)

Garbage Disposal TLC

Place a handful of ice cubes in the disposal. Add a few pieces of lemon, orange or lime peels and run disposal with cold water for 15 to 30 seconds. Continue to rinse with cold water.
To avoid clogging your garbage disposal, remember to not pour grease down the drain and do not put in fibrous food or fat.

Refrigerator TLC

Unplug your refrigerator and use a vacuum to remove any dust from the coils. This will help it run more efficiently and also save you some money on your utility bills.
Make sure it’s loaded properly. Contents should be evenly distributed.

If your appliances need a technician’s TLC, call Maslyn & Sons Appliance Repair to play cupid for your appliances before Valentine’s Day arrives.

We have mentioned in previous recipe posts that the Maslyn Mrs. is not know for her passion for the kitchen, however she DOES love this delectable recipe and has been known to double it. She says the flavor combinations are amazing and the Maslyn men agree!

Ina Garten’s Parmesan-Roasted Broccoli

4 to 5 pounds broccoli
4 garlic cloves, peeled and thinly sliced
Good olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
3 tablespoons pine nuts, toasted
1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons julienned fresh basil leaves (about 12 leaves)

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

Cut the broccoli florets from the thick stalks, leaving an inch or two of stalk attached to the florets, discarding the rest of the stalks. Cut the larger pieces through the base of the head with a small knife, pulling the florets apart. You should have about 8 cups of florets.
Place the broccoli florets on a sheet pan large enough to hold them in a single layer.
Toss the garlic on the broccoli and drizzle with 5 tablespoons olive oil. Sprinkle with the salt and pepper.
Roast for 20 to 25 minutes, until crisp-tender and the tips of some of the florets are browned.

Remove the broccoli from the oven and immediately toss with 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil, the lemon zest, lemon juice, pine nuts, Parmesan, and basil. Serve hot.

Hopefully your oven survived the winter well and is happily ready to enter the coming Spring… if not, call Maslyn and Sons Appliance for oven repair or calibration so you can make this scrumptious recipe.

Always run hot water at the sink just before running dishwasher. This ensures the first fill is hot.
To avoid white film build up, ask us about one of our favorite products, LemiShine, when we are out at your house. (We will be happy to sell you some & save you a trip to the store!)
Also, try GLISTEN 2x per year to prevent and get rid of film (you may need to do it twice) – it’s also a deodorizer.
We can also run a special solution through your machine to make it SHINE!

Safety Comes First When Repairing Appliances:
Always unplug the appliance first, even before turning the first screw to disassemble
Watch out for sharp edges, especially on dryers (even professionals often end up with deep cuts and scrapes)
Never wear jewelry of any type while working on equipment
If you have long hair, tie it back
Wear safety glasses
Ensure that your work area has ample lighting
Consider wearing protective footwear while working on appliances
Lift appliances using your legs, not your back

If you don’t want to do it yourself, call Maslyn & Sons Appliance and let US do the work for you! (We charge double if you have tried to work on it yourself – haha! Just kidding! [kind of]. )

Fridge Humor

Published on 20 January 2013 by in Tips

We don’t need “smart” appliances like a refrigerator that – when you open it for a snack – announces in a recorded voice “Your celery is limp”. You won’t know HOW your fridge knows this, and, what’s worse, you won’t know who ELSE it’s telling! Instead, what we could REALLY use is a refrigerator that refuses to let us open its door when it senses that we are about to consume our fourth pudding snack in two hours.

Cloudy Dishes?

Published on 07 January 2013 by in Tips

Are your glasses white and cloudy? Most detergents no longer have phosphates, so they aren’t doing their job removing grime & hard water. This may better for the environment (we hope that’s true), but definitely NOT for our dishes! One solution: add LemiShine to your loads. Maslyn & Sons Appliance carries it on our vans… ask to a buy a bottle on our next visit. (You can also get it at WalMart and many grocery stores.)
