Washing Machine Tip

We all know to clean out our DRYER’S lint filter, but did you know that your WASHER has a lint filter too? These filters can get clogged and cause your laundry to come out of the washer linty.

Maslyn & Sons Appliance can do this for you or you can try to do it yourself (some models are easier than others).

The first step is to find the filter. If you have your owner’s manual, it will tell you where the washer’s lint filter is located. If the manual is long gone, you may be able to locate it online.

If you can’t find the manual, it’s time to go on a lint filter hunt. Some are located along the top rim of the washer tub. Slide your fingers around the top of the washer drum and you may find a screen to pull out or just simply a great deal of lint that needs to be removed. Some filters are inside the agitator. If your agitator cover is removable, check near the bottom where it attaches to the tub. Finally, the lint trap or filter may be at the end of the drainage hose.

Wherever you find it it is likely you’ll find a sticky layer of wet lint. Use a paper towel or a brush to clean the lint off the screen mesh and rinse it in hot water before replacing. The hot water will also help to clear away any detergent or fabric softener residue that slows drainage.

Ideally, the washer filter should be cleaned at least four times per year to keep your machine working its best.

Laundry Energy Savings

Use low temp settings instead of hot.
Load washing machine to capacity.
Dry similar types of clothes together. Ex: Lightweight synthetics dry more quickly than natural fiber clothes.
Don’t add wet items to load that’s already partially dried.
Clean dryer filter after each use.
Dry full loads but don’t overfill.
Check outside dryer exhaust vent to make sure its clean… if your vent line seems blocked this not only impeded drying but can also be a hazard. Have your line cleaned out once a year or so.

Kitchen Tip (Pancake Squares Recipe)

If we are overdoing the recipe tips it is because the Maslyn Mrs. discovered Pinterest, where she PINS recipes to a board (?!) because they “look good” – but she will never make them. (In fact she calls her recipe board “Recipes to Try – haha“.)
She also asks that if YOU make them to please send a sample back with one of our Techs for her to taste to see if they are were as good as they looked when she pinned them! -Now it is MY turn to say “haha!”.

Pancake Squares
3/4 cup milk
2 T. melted butter
1 large egg
1 T. sugar
1 cup flour
2 t. baking powder
1/4 t. salt

Preheat oven to 350°. Lightly grease an 8×8 baking dish. In a large mixing bowl, beat together milk, butter and egg. Add sugar, then gradually beat the flour in. Carefully stir in the baking powder and salt. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Serves 4-6.

**You can make them plain and serve with syrup, jam, or honey or you can bake with toppings like chocolate chips or banana pieces or blueberries. You can even do half and half or thirds!

Laundry Mildew Tip

Here is a laundry tip if your towels get left sitting damp in the washer dryer too long and have that musky mildew odor that never seems to completely go away.
Wash your towels one time in hot water with 1 cup of vinegar.
Then run again in hot water with 1/2 of baking soda.
This will strip your towels of all of that residue and mildew smell and will actually leave them feeling fluffy and smelling fresh. (Do not add laundry detergent to either wash. Just once with vinegar and once with baking soda.)

Microwave Tips

To minimize the number of problems and repairs with your microwave, do these easy maintenance tasks: clean the interior and exterior of your microwave unit at regular intervals or when dirty; make sure that the microwave outlet has surge protection; never run the microwave when empty, because that can damage the internal circuitry of the unit.

Microwaves are usually pretty problem free appliances. These are some of the most common problems that can go wrong with your microwave:

Microwave units are equipped with line fuses – parts that act as protectors if there is a power surge. If your microwave stops working, first check the fuse to see if the fuse has melted or blown, and replace the fuse with a new part.

It is essential that the microwave door is properly closed when the unit is in operation, so there is a door switch located on the microwave door that ensures that it cannot run when the door is not closed. Sometimes this switch wears out or stops working and then the microwave controls think that the door is open even when it is closed. Both the microwave door switch and the latch connected to the switch break on occasion and require replacement.

The microwave touch pad is a delicate instrument that guides the operation of the unit. If there is a spill on the pad, moisture has been known to collect on the inside, and the touch pad can malfunction. Take the touch pad out of the microwave and let it dry or replace the part if necessary.

Kitchen Tip (Appetizer Recipe)

This rich (and calorie laden) spread is a to-die-for appetizer that that Maslyn Mrs. grew up eating at her best friend’s house. The recipe eventually migrated over to HER family’s home and then of course made its way to ours. Eat with caution… it is known to be addicting.


1 c. extra sharp cheddar, grated
½ c. mozzarella
¼ c parmesan
1/8 tsp. beaumond seasoning
1/8 tsp.garlic
4 scallions, include some tops
½ c. mayonnaise

Spread onto individual bread rounds and bake at 325 for 10-15 minutes and this make a terrific appetizer.
If you spread onto the face of a halved loaf, it would go nicely as a bread served with dinner.

**Avoid having to have Maslyn & Sons out for an oven repair by cleaning your oven right after baking something and it is already HOT.

Corned Beef and Cabbage Recipe

We are putting this up 11 days be for St Patty’s day because the roast needs to sit in the brine for TEN DAYS! Will anyone in the Maslyn clan even make this recipe??? No, we will not. But on the chance that one of you is a devoted holiday cook, we wanted to give you the chance to make it. If you DO, please email us and let us know… we will be tremendously impressed and put pictures up to celebrate your devotion (which we cannot even CONCEIVE of!).

Yield: 6 to 8 servings
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: approximately 3 hours
Inactive Prep Time: 10 days

2 to 2 1/2 pound Corned-Beef Brisket*, recipe follows
1 tablespoon coarsely ground black pepper
1 teaspoon ground allspice
2 bay leaves
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 pound diced carrots, approximately 4 small
1/2 pound diced onions, approximately 2 small
1 pound potatoes, peeled and chopped, approximately 3 medium
1/4 pound diced celery, approximately 2 stalks
1 small head cabbage, chopped, approximately 2 pounds
*Cook’s note: Brisket should be prepared through the brining stage, but not cooked.

Place the corned beef, pepper, allspice, bay leaves and salt into a large 8-quart pot along with 3-quarts of water. Cover and set over high heat. Bring to a boil, decrease the heat to low and cook, at a low simmer for 2 1/2 hours.

After 2 1/2 hours add the carrots, onions, potatoes and celery. Return to a simmer and cook uncovered for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, add the cabbage and cook for an additional 15 to 20 minutes until the potatoes and cabbage are tender. Remove the bay leaves and serve immediately.

Corned Beef:
2 quarts water
1 cup kosher salt
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons saltpeter
1 cinnamon stick, broken into several pieces
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon black peppercorns
8 whole cloves
8 whole allspice berries
12 whole juniper berries
2 bay leaves, crumbled
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
2 pounds ice
1 (4 to 5 pound) beef brisket, trimmed
1 small onion, quartered
1 large carrot, coarsely chopped
1 stalk celery, coarsely chopped
Place the water into a large 6 to 8 quart stockpot along with salt, sugar, saltpeter, cinnamon stick, mustard seeds, peppercorns, cloves, allspice, juniper berries, bay leaves and ginger. Cook over high heat until the salt and sugar have dissolved. Remove from the heat and add the ice. Stir until the ice has melted. If necessary, place the brine into the refrigerator until it reaches a temperature of 45 degrees F. Once it has cooled, place the brisket in a 2-gallon zip top bag and add the brine. Seal and lay flat inside a container, cover and place in the refrigerator for 10 days. Check daily to make sure the beef is completely submerged and stir the brine.

After 10 days, remove from the brine and rinse well under cool water. Place the brisket into a pot just large enough to hold the meat, add the onion, carrot and celery and cover with water by 1-inch. Set over high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover and gently simmer for 2 1/2 to 3 hours or until the meat is fork tender. Remove from the pot and thinly slice across the grain.

**If you are going to all the trouble to make this St. Patty’s day meal, we recommend you do not clean your oven right before you want to cook a big, important meal in it. During or after cleaning is the main time ovens tend to go out. But if you DO need Maslyn & Sons for an oven repair, give us a call and we will be out in a jiffy!

We have become conditioned to change our smoke alarm batteries when we set our clocks back or forward. Maybe we should add our fridge water filters to that list too.

Most manufacturers recommend you change the water filter on your fridge every 6 months. This isn’t just a money making scheme.
Failure to do this allows unabsorbed water contaminants and newly formed bacteria to saturate the filter, forcing the filter to leak contaminants back into processed water. Then the “filtered” water you are drinking may actually contain more contaminants than the filter was intended to remove in the first place!
